Né en 1943 à Oklahoma City, Joe Haldeman est diplômé en physique et en astronomie. Mobilisé en 1968, il saute sur une mine au Viêt-nam. Son premier récit "War Year" (1972, traduit aux éditions de l'Amitié sous le titre "Au service de la guerre") se nourrit de cette expérience.

Il se tourne vers la science-fiction et revient une nouvelle fois à son expérience de combattant dans une sale guerre manipulée par la politique : il la transpose dans le roman "The Forever War" (1974, "La Guerre
