Leena-Marjatta Pulfer-Korhonen was born in the Finnish village of Otava on February 10, 1942. After graduating from a girls' high school in Mikkeli, Leena studied Finnish language and literature at the University of Helsinki, graduating with a master's degree in philosophy. In 1969 she married the journalist Fritz Pulfer in Zurich. From then on Leena lived in Switzerland.
